Restaurant & Hospitality
Editorial bilingual website for Dunya Lounge - a Levantine Mediterranean restaurant and luxury hookah lounge in downtown San Diego. Arabic and English UI, OpenTable integration, menu storytelling, and atmospheric brand presentation.
Dunya Lounge (دنيا) brings together two experiences that rarely live under one roof at this level: a serious Levantine Mediterranean kitchen anchored by hand-crafted mezze, vibrant salads, and char-grilled lamb chops, and a premium hookah lounge with branded leather booths, floral ceiling installations, a marble craft-cocktail bar, and an atmosphere designed for a long, unhurried evening. The brand sits in the heart of downtown San Diego, where it competes against generic Mediterranean restaurants on one side and trendy nightlife venues on the other. The previous digital experience treated the two halves of the business separately - menu items in one place, lounge photos in another - and lost the singular vision that actually makes Dunya special. Bilingual Arabic-speaking guests, who are core to the brand, had no clear acknowledgement of their language on the site at all.
The previous site also missed the rhythm of how guests actually choose a downtown San Diego restaurant on a Friday night. Diners scrolling through OpenTable and Google move fast: they want to see the room, see the food, understand the price, and book a table inside of two minutes. Anything that gets in the way is friction. The hookah lounge layer adds another dimension - guests booking the lounge want a different feel than guests booking a dinner table - and the architecture had to respect that without splitting the brand.
Bilingual presence is the other half of the story. A meaningful share of Dunya's guests grew up reading Arabic at home and English in school, and many bring family members who only read Arabic. Treating Arabic as an afterthought - a single translated menu page buried in the footer - would have undersold the experience and the hospitality the team actually delivers in person.
We designed and built a dark editorial bilingual website that mirrors the moodlit dining room: deep aubergine and charcoal background, warm amber candle accents, soft serif headlines, and cinematic food photography shot in low candlelight with the same color temperature as the room. Every section is anchored by an Arabic calligraphy title (حكايتنا Our Story, من مطبخنا From Our Kitchen, تجربة الصالة The Lounge Experience, قيمنا What We Stand For, نظرة من الداخل A Glimpse Inside, آراء ضيوفنا What Our Guests Say) so Arabic-speaking guests immediately see themselves welcomed, while English-speaking guests get the same content cleanly translated. The architecture splits cleanly between the two product lines: a Menu page covering the full Levantine kitchen (Classic Hummus, Grilled Prawns with Dunya dynamite sauce, Lamb Chops with rosemary, the Family Platter with shish tawouk, beef kebab, kafta, and lamb chops), and a Hookah Lounge page that walks guests through the premium-flavor menu, the marble craft-cocktail bar, and the booth experience. Reservations route through OpenTable with a deep link and a click-to-call to (619) 325-1900. Four brand values - Shared Moments, Warm Hospitality, Honest Ingredients, Simple Excellence - appear consistently across the homepage, About page, and the lounge page. Schema markup covers Restaurant, BarOrPub, Menu and MenuItem, OpeningHoursSpecification, AggregateRating, and FAQPage. SEO targets downtown San Diego Levantine and Mediterranean queries plus hookah-lounge buyer intent (Mediterranean restaurant downtown San Diego, hookah lounge downtown San Diego, lamb chops San Diego, Levantine restaurant San Diego). Hosting runs on Inkhost dedicated infrastructure with edge caching so the moody hero loads instantly on phones from the Gaslamp to Little Italy.
The visual direction is intentionally moody and intentionally generous: deep aubergine and charcoal background, soft amber candle highlights, hand-set serif display type for headlines, and food photography shot in low candlelight that matches the actual color temperature of the dining room. Every section opens with an Arabic calligraphy title set just above the English equivalent - small, confident, and beautifully spaced - so an Arabic-speaking guest immediately sees themselves welcomed, while English-speaking guests get a graceful entry into the language and culture without translation friction.
The architecture splits cleanly. The Menu page covers the full Levantine kitchen with rich descriptions, ingredient honesty, and photography that lets the food do the talking. The Hookah Lounge page walks guests through the premium-flavor menu, the marble craft-cocktail bar, the leather-booth and floral-ceiling-installation experience, and the price expectations for a lounge evening. Reservations route through OpenTable with a deep link and a click-to-call fallback to (619) 325-1900 for guests who prefer to talk. The four brand values - Shared Moments, Warm Hospitality, Honest Ingredients, Simple Excellence - run through the homepage, the About page, and the lounge page so the brand promise repeats without ever feeling forced.
Schema markup is comprehensive: Restaurant at the brand level with full address, hours, phone, and aggregate rating; BarOrPub for the lounge experience; Menu and MenuItem schemas with descriptions and pricing for the headline dishes; openingHoursSpecification so Google's knowledge panel surfaces accurate hours; and FAQPage covering the most common pre-visit questions (reservations, walk-ins, dress code, hookah age policy, accommodations for large parties). SEO targets downtown San Diego Levantine and Mediterranean queries plus hookah-lounge buyer intent. Performance is aggressive - sub-second LCP on the moody hero, all Core Web Vitals green - supported by Inkhost dedicated hosting with edge caching across San Diego County.
